In 2010 War Memorials Trust received a legacy of £30,000; the charity was unaware that it was to be a beneficiary and so the gift proved to be a great boost.
At that time the Trust was fundraising to develop a Learning Programme to engage young people with their war memorial heritage in the run up to and during the centenary of World War I. Some money had been raised but the charity faced the challenge; many interested donors required more detail about the programme than the charity was able to provide at that stage. It became clear that until an education expert could be brought in to identify a specific remit of the programme no further fund raising was likely.
The Trust made the decision to use the legacy donation for the education programme, enabling them to recruit a Learning Officer on a twelve month contract. The Learning Officer has been able to work on developing the programme for schools, youth groups and cadets; identify where the War Memorials Trust can provide unique resources to develop understanding amongst the young and thus provide a detailed plan for future fund raising. With the plan in place the Trust will be able to approach funders again, hopefully, securing the additional resources required to implement the Learning Programme.
